Thanks for helping out this past season. I assure you the persistent
weather pattern that prevailed throughout October and continuing into
November is not typical! This has been really the pits.
The weekend trip to Eastern Shore and Chincoteague was great! It was my
first "vacation" in over a year. Several highlights included two Snow
Bunting and an adult White-eyed Vireo. Rain held off on the islands for
the most part with mist and light rain Saturday night. Mostly cloudy
however, which doesn't work well when you're trying to do photography.
I need to make it up to the mountain to retrieve the case and I hope to key
in those last few days into database. All-in-all it was a good season for
several species, especially the Red-tailed. Falcon numbers were way down
however. Kestrel was almost cut in half from last year. While at
Kiptopeake on Sunday Bob Anderson also said they had a marked drop in
Kestrel this year. They are also considering NOT counting vultures. Seems
a lot of the southward bound end up coming back up the islands during the
day. I don't think the counter will be heart-broken. On Sunday things
were extremely slow there and I managed to spot a migrating Sharp-shinned,
the only bird of the hour. Guess that was my last official act as a hawk
counter for the season!
Hope you and Sandy have a wonderful holiday season! I'm certainly looking
forward to the upcoming 4-day holiday break. Friday Keith and I hope to
head to the valley for all day venture. It's suppose to be sunny! Hooray!
