There were at least ten RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS at Kingstowne Lake this
afternoon, one or two of which were female. There also was a lone male
BUFFLEHEAD swimming with them. The surprise of the afternoon, though, came
while I was trying to count the LESSER SCAUP (five males and one female). I
suddenly realized that the last few scaup were actually RING-NECKED DUCKS
(three males). I have not seen any of them in my area for quite a while (a
month, maybe).
Kingstowne Lake is at the corner of S Van Dorn St and Kingstowne Parkway,
just south of Alexandria.
