Today, I went down to Kerr Reservoir in Mecklenburg County. Highlight
bird was a very out of season BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER working the hedgerow
below the dam at Tailrace Park. Other highlights included a MERLIN at
Palmer Point, an immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at Palmer Point and an
adult WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW at Dick Cross WMA.
I spent a good part of the day at Palmer Point and, despite the optimum
viewing conditions, I was unable to relocate the Pacific Loon found
there on 1/1. The Red-throated Loon that's been hanging around down
there was also nowhere to be seen. On the other hand, there were many
COMMON LOONS. Waterfowl found elsewhere on the lake included LESSER
SCAUP, GREEN-WINGED TEAL and AMERICAN WIGEON. HORNED GREBES numbered in
the hundreds and were seen mostly from the south end of North Bend
Park. Gull species were dominated by RING-BILLED GULLS with a few
HERRING GULLS and BONAPARTE'S GULLS mixed in. Throughout the day, I
counted 8 BALD EAGLES (3 ad. and 5 imm.). Good birding.
