Hi all,
I went down to Julie Metz this afternoon thinking sparrows. I stopped at
the corner right before the memorial because there were several birds
moving around, but no Harris'. After awhile I looked to my right and
there were 8-10 wax wings about 8 feet away and a couple feet above eye
level. I had my digital camera on a monopod, turned on and zoomed to 7x
with my finger on the shutter release, but I didn't take a shot. Hey, we
see wax wings all the time and this is a sparrow trip. Doh! Then I
noticed one bird that has a thin, yellow, zig zag line running
lengthwise through the wing feathers. Before the words Bohemian Wax Wing
can even form in my mind they all flew up, swirled around and took off
cross country. Aargh! Live and learn, I guess.
It wasn't enough to make a call, but tantalizing. Keep an eye on the wax
wings, northern virginia birders.
I'm 0 for 3 with the Harris Sparrow.
