At every interchange on I-66 between Centreville and the Beltway, there are two
or more extra-tall (75 feet or more) street lights. In at least three of the
interchanges (Rte 29 - Centreville, Rte 28, and the Fairfax County Parkway),
crows (species unknown) are nesting in the very top of the light structures.
Out west and in Mexico, I've frequently seen ravens nesting on electrical
towers, but I've never seen crows nesting on artificial structures here in the
East.
I'll be interested to see which species of crow is nesting in the light
structures. In my experience, fish crows often nest in the smaller branches
near the tops of trees, while American crows nest lower and closer to the main
stems of the trees. I'm sure on at least one occasion on my daily commute down
I-66 over the next month or so, I'll be stuck in traffic and crawling by the
nest sites. Maybe with the car windows down, I'll be able to figure out which
species is involved.
If others have experience with crows nesting on artificial structures, I'd be
interested in the details.
Thanks.
