This morning I found a large flock of mystery
birds on the driveway and then on the porch roof
outside my bedroom window. I haven't been able
to find them in any of my books. And, of course,
I didn't think to try for pictures, though I will
tomorrow, if I can.
They are large birds, nearly the size of mourning
doves, but shaped more like starlings. They have
long, sturdy black beaks. Head and shoulders are
light brown--almost dove-colored. Underparts are
strikingly spotted--black, with white 'polka
dots'
When I saw them in the driveway I thought at
first they were crows, because of the way they
were moving--binoculars revealed the lighter
coloration, however. Then when they arrived on
the porch roof and began foraging in the gutters,
I got a really good look. I've never seen them
before.
I live on farmland north of Charlottesville;
there are woods across the road and behind me,
and a couple of small stands of cedars on the
property, as well as a creek.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Grace
