This evening at Huntley I noticed a variety of birds sharing a dead tree
at the beginning of the boardwalk. They were all fluffed up and sitting
in rather close proximity in the sun and some were preening: two baby
bluebirds, a couple of gnatcatchers and a red-eyed vireo. It then
occurred to me that they were drying off after the rain!
Then, walking through the woods, I was taken aback by a large perched
bird which was shaking itself like a dog: a Barred Owl, who then began
to preen and who let me watch him from only about 20 feet (he was near
the trail). Then, to top it off, right near him I could hear the
funny-sounding shushing of baby owls, so very well described by Karen and
John Neyere who had actually seen them just an hour before. Although I
couldn't find any, just hearing them was a big treat.
