The chilly temperatures seem to have accelerated migration schedules.
On Saturday I saw the first hermit thrush of the season on the trail
in back of the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad, and this morning saw
the first dark-eyed junco right out back!
For those interested in bird rescue and rehabilitation, there was a
feature article on the Virginia Wildlife Center (located in
Waynesboro) in the Washington Post Weekend section. Quite a
coincidence, as I made my first visit there only one week ago,
bringing in an injured goldfinch whose wing turned out to be broken
beyond repair and who therefore, tragically, had to be euthanized.
On Sunday Jacqueline and I attended the Center's open house and saw a
number of permanently disabled owls, hawks, and eagles that are kept
for education purposes. It's well worth a visit, and well worth
supporting.
