Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end   time: 17:30:00
Total observation time: 9.5 hours

Official Counter: Ian Topolsky

Observers:        Bev Leeuwenburg, Lad Topolsky, The Littles, Yusuf Gantt

Visitors:
  Shout-outs go to:

-"Suzy Q" Heath & Max brightened our day.
-Ray & Ann Smith were one of the first few onboard.
-Fred & Ann Bogar (another Ann, might be a Snickers record), always nice
to put a face to a name that appears regularly on VA-bird.
-Bob Horton, visiting biefly from NJ and sought us out on
Hawkcount.org, hope to see you again in this here neck o' the woods.
-Andy Martin & Carol Miller dropped by on their way to other birds.
-Robert Guitteau picked up on a good number of birds.

And last, but NEVER least- Joe & Jura Coleman. A pleasure to see you
both but I can only count Jura; Our only Bernese Mountain Dog to date, and
a pleasure to have around expensive optics...

Weather:
Too much of a good thing?

  Great Cloudcover upon arrival but increasing to 90% by 10 o' clock EST;
the problem- an extremely low ceiling that refused to yield as
Broad-wingeds (trained in the art of illusion) kettled up and disappeared
before our very eyes. Around 40-50% for the rest of the observation
period, after what appeared to be the big flight of the day. Light East
winds held true, at 1 Beaufort, with a gradual decline late afternoon.
Temp topped off at 80F.

Observations:
As mentioned before, birds headed up into 90% Cloudcover means missed
birds (it pains me to admit it).

Bottom line, it was a tough day. With no shortage of eyes, it seemed
SLOW and finding birds took some work but Broad-wingeds, to our surprise,
nickle-n-dimed us to a reasonable number in the end (as did
Sharp-shinneds). Osprey gave us a decent late flight, picking up the slack
and coming in one bird shy of yesterday's total (16 for the day, none
packing a lunch).

  Bald Eagle breakdown: 2- adult, 1- 1st yr, 1- 2nd yr, 1- 3rd yr.

Passerines took the backseat for the second day, but for one surprise
coming early* (in no particular order):

  *Black-billed Cuckoo- 1, Black-throated Green Warbler- 3, Warbler sp-
14, Chimney Swift- 100+, Hummingbird sp- 9, Red-headed Woodpecker- 2,
Pileated Woodpecker- 2, Red-bellied Woodpecker- 2, Common Nighthawk- 1,
Eastern Wood-Pewee- 1, Wood Duck- 5 (1 drake), Carolina Wren- 2, American
Robin- 9, Blue Jay- 15, American Crow- 18, Common Raven- 6, American
Goldfinch- 11.

  Canines: A good day

Australian Shepherd- 1, Pug- 2 (one blk, one fawn), Bernese Mountain Dog-
1, Siberian Husky- 1.

Predictions:
Will BJ succeed in helping Bev to finally figure out that confounded
folding-chair from last year?

"BETTER NOT TELL YOU NOW"- Hmmm, I like the suspense...

Snickers Gap Hawkwatch was established in 1990.  It is located in
northern Virginia, on the Clarke and Loudoun County line.  It is reached
by taking VA Route 7 to the county line, which runs atop the ridge at
Snickers Gap.  On the south side of Route 7 is a commuter parking lot.
The count is conducted from there.  It is a volunteer site, and is counted
in fall only, from late August until late November or early December.
There are no facilities at the site, so bring a snack, drinks, and a
chair.  Many of the birds can be distant, and a scope is helpful.

As a volunteer site, we are always looking to increase our pool of
counters.  We are eager to train those who have never counted, but are
skilled with hawk identification.  We are also willing to pair
inexperienced observers with experienced counters.  Please contact the
compiler, Todd Day, at blkvulture@xxxxxxx with any questions or if you are
interested in participating in the count.
