Observation end   time: 18:00:00
Total observation time: 10 hours

Official Counter: T.M. Day and I.C. Topolsky

Observers:        Lad Topolsky, Yusuf Gantt

Visitors:
Bob Lyon & Brian Jensen (occasional visitors and always good company),
two individuals specializing in moulding  the great minds of the future
(sorry, I didn't catch your names) and Mike Lamb (hope to see you back
soon; I expect you to have at least "Mickey" and "Dolly" memorized... if
not, don't fret- just keep on comin').

Weather:
A bit of a mixed bag today. Winds held relatively tight to WNW @ 1 up
until the 12 o' clock (birdtime) hour; the next two hours had the
weathervane in a mildly dizzy state before some East winds picked up in
the 2 o' clock hour to give it a purpose (at 2 Beaufort, with a gradually
decline to zip by closing).

Cloudcover was near perfect up until the change in wind direction,
65-90% (with a brief period of 40%) up until the shift. High Temp 82F. 40K
visibilty crept in from 2:00-4:00 EST.

Observations:
Our first ten-species day of the season, with a single Red-shouldered
Hawk making an appearance in the 11 o' clock hour. Our second Merlin of
the season came in the last hour of observation, possibly setting us up
for a good year on their end of the spectrum.

  Bald Eagle breakdown: 2- ad, 1- 3rd yr, 1- 1st yr.

Out of the 5 Osprey, none were packing a lunch.

  A long list here:

Double-crested Cormorant- 1, Canada Goose- 3, Hummingbird sp- 7+,
Red-headed Woodpecker- 2, Red-bellied Woodpecker- 3, Downy- 1, Pileated-
1, Mourning Dove- 3, Rock Pidgeon (as Carl spells it)- 2, Chimney Swift-
300 give or take, Swallow sp- 7, Carolina Wren- 2, Tufted Titmouse- 1,
Cedar Waxwing- 35 give or take, Northern Cardinal- 5, Blue Jay- 6,
Black-throated Green Warbler- 1, American Crow- 36+, Common Raven- 6.
Flycatchers- 2 (not seen long enough to identify confidently to genera).

Dachsunds- 2, Labradoodle (debatable, but worthy of note)- 1, Canine sp-
2 (both endearing, but don't know what to do with them).

  Monarch Butterfly- 2.

Predictions:
As predicted by the Magic Eightball, Todd was the epitome of "dashing"
today (donning a "Coach" ascot for the first 3 hours of observation- I kid
you not...)

Will we add any new canines to our list tomorrow?

Eightball, "My sources say no". The Eightball has spoken.

Snickers Gap Hawkwatch was established in 1990.  It is located in
northern Virginia, on the Clarke and Loudoun County line.  It is reached
by taking VA Route 7 to the county line, which runs atop the ridge at
Snickers Gap.  On the south side of Route 7 is a commuter parking lot.
The count is conducted from there.  It is a volunteer site, and is counted
in fall only, from late August until late November or early December.
There are no facilities at the site, so bring a snack, drinks, and a
chair.  Many of the birds can be distant, and a scope is helpful.

As a volunteer site, we are always looking to increase our pool of
counters.  We are eager to train those who have never counted, but are
skilled with hawk identification.  We are also willing to pair
inexperienced observers with experienced counters.  Please contact the
compiler, Todd Day, at blkvulture@xxxxxxx with any questions or if you are
interested in participating in the count.
