Observation start time: 08:30:00
Observation end   time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 7.5 hours

Official Counter: Brenda Tekin

Observers:

Visitors:
Pat Alther, Bonnie Sexton, Alice Davis, Robert Plank, Lynn, Clair Mellinger
and group for hawk identification workshop

Weather:
It was one of those days where you could have stayed home to catch up on a
few zzzzssss or much neglected household chores and not feel guilty.
Arrived by 7:30 a.m. EST to find eastern and western slopes and upper
ridge socked in with dense fog and a steady breeze 7-10 km/h out of the
NW.  Fog began to clear from upper ridge by 8:30  Things began to look
promising with blue skies and white cirrus clouds.  Both the eastern edge
of Shenandoah Valley and western edge of Nelson County socked in for most
of the morning with visibility less than 1.5 km/h over Waynesboro on
western slope.  By 11 .m. EST thick dark clouds began to roll in on a N to
NNE wind following the ridge line southward.  What few times we could see
patches of blue sky with white puffy clouds overhead, we figured the birds
were going over.  Just a few short miles to east and west of the ridge
there was plenty of sunshine!

Temp:  23.5 (high) at 11 a.m. then temp dropped to 22.5 for remainder of
afternoon.
Humidity: 61% increasing to 71%
BarPressure: 1018<1017
Cloud Cover:  100%
Visibility:  less than 2 km/h

Observations:
SLOW!  We were hoping for a decent flight of Sharp-shinned but then winds
died down for several hours and thick clouds rolled in.

At least we were able to stay entertained counting Blue Jay.  Great flight
today with at least 545 counted crossing the gap and many more on north
side of the ridge.  260 passed within a 30-minute span between 8:30 - 9
a.m. EST.
Brown Thrasher - one in brush short distance from observers
Killdeer - 2
Indigo Bunting - 1
Am.Tree Swallow
Chimney Swift
Hummingbird - 1
Monarch Butterly - 1

Predictions:
Increasing clouds for the region and rain by late day with approach of
remnants of yet another hurricane.  We still haven't dried out from last
week's Ivan.
