Observation start time: 08:30:00
Observation end time: 18:00:00
Total observation time: 9 hours
Official Counter: Tad Finnell
Observers: Clark Hill, Mike Purdy
Visitors:
Clark and Stephanie were the only ones daring enough to visit today.
Weather:
Mountain socked in until 12:30 EST, and then the fog started lifting and a
good breeze from the west started bringing the birds. As the afternoon
continued the sky became less and less cloudy and visibility inproved.
Temps stayed at 13 degrees C. most of the afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
First Goshawk of the season around 2:30
All the Osprey were below eye level, and some almost missed
Lots of Sharpies
Non-raptor Observations:
Mike Purdy and I participated in the second annual Big Sit at Harvey's.
Thanks to fog so thick that visibility was limited to about 10 feet for
the first part of the day, our volume of species was not what we would
have wished for, but we were content to finish with 33 species. Highlights
include 2 orange-crowned warblers (seen throughout most of the day feeding
on the slope), a palm warbler, a flyby group of 14 great blue herons, and
a good selecttion of hawks.
A dead battery as we were about to depart allowed us to remain until
8:00, after seeing the late nighthawk, when battery cables were brought to
us.
Predictions:
I predict the counters will leave earlier than we did.
