A morning's watch on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel reinforced the theory
of veteran hurricane-and-birdwatchers (Fussell, LeGrand et al.) that a storm
that stays offshore does not produce pelagic seabirds onshore, even if winds
blow onshore. Brian Patteson noted zero seabirds in association with the
storm between Nags Head and Hatteras Village, North Carolina yesterday and
today, and this morning's watch from 0619 to 0840 at the CBBT produced only a
handful of Sandwich, Caspian, Common, Forster's, and Royal Terns (and Black
Skimmers), about the same numbers one could expect without a storm. A roost
of about 2200 Royals on Fisherman Island was noteworthy. Mitchell Byrd and
Bill Williams found a Dickcissel on Island 3 of the CBBT a little later on,
only the second one of the fall.
