At Greenfield in Botetourt County late Thursday afternoon, April 15,
there was one fishing osprey, the great egret who's been hanging out
there for several days, four great blue herons, five greater yellowlegs,
two solitary sandpipers, two spotted sandpipers, six killdeer, seven
Canada geese (one sitting on eggs) and 11 blue-winged teal by way of
waterbirds. The usual redwings, American robins, song sparrows, one
Cooper's hawk, one pine warbler, eastern meadowlarks, TV's and others.
I was chagrined to miss the dunlin that Tad Finnell reported there, or
else I mis-ID'd him amid all the other peeps that were thronging the mud
flats.
Brilliant sun and a hard blue sky made for good light. Set up the scope
and got good views of most of the water birds.
