Hola,
A couple people have recently asked if anyone was keeping track of the
Red-necked Grebes that are popping up. Indeed, at least one person is, and
probably others. I'm keeping locations and dates the birds are being seen,
plus some other information. If people are shy and don't want to post to the
list, please at least send me a note letting me know where you had the birds.
Also, if you report a bird or birds and don't feel like sending a note to
the list that the bird or birds is still there a day or two or a week later,
I'd be interested in that too. Also, if you would be so kind, a location and
the county would be grand. The name of the body of water (or a landmark near
it in the case of drainage ponds that they have been found in), plus a point
of reference if the body of water is the Potomac or other major would help.
Right now I think I have information for about twenty locations in Virginia
(and this gets tricky, but I am including the birds in the Potomac in parts
of that river that are in fact in Virginia, but not including them in
Virginia if you are seeing them in parts of the river that are DC or Maryland
(no emails please from those Marylanders that don't accept the fact that
there are portions of the Potomac that are indeed Virginia)). I am also
keeping track of these things in Maryland too, so the birds seen from VA but
in MD are getting counted. Plumage would be helpful too. I'm guessing that
the vast majority of these birds are in winter plumage, since very few people
are mentioning that they are in alternate plumage.
Thanks.
Todd
