Passing by the smaller of the 2 drainage ponds at the intersection of hwy 28
and 234 in Manassas I saw a Great Egret and Green Heron today around 4:00. I
also saw them there yesterday. Also, traveling south on Hwy 15 north of Orange,
while crossing the Robinson River I saw two adult and two juvenile Loggerhead
Shrikes on the utility wires directly over the river next to the bridge.
After stopping and looking with the binoculars I could see one of the adults
had
what appeared to be a female goldfinch in its claws. There were several bank
swallows around as well. I've seen Shrikes several times along this stretch of
road before but never what appeared to be a family unit. On arriving home,
about 30 min on the back deck produced Brown Thrasher, Eastern Kingbird,
Eastern
Phoebe, Black and White Warbler, Pine Warbler, Carolina Wren, Indigo Bunting,
female Scarlet Tenager, Catbird, Yellow-Billed Cuckoo, Yellow-breasted Chat,
Hairy Woodpecker, Cedar Waxwings, Kingfisher, plus titmice, chickadees,
cardinals, etc. and the notorious Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds, of course. We had
14 at
two feeders last year and someone suggested putting out more feeders. We have
4 feeders out now, and they were right, the best true count we have gotten
this year is 27. Its quite a show when they have a sugar water "hummmmm" going
on, which is most all the time. Dave White Zion Crossroads
