HI Virginia Birders
While I was in Lee county today I stopped and checked out the Great Blue Heron
Rookery on the Powell River in Lee County. The Rookery was located last year
by Jim Herinomus. This year there are 20 nests located in two huge Sycamore
trees. The young herons can be seen sticking their heads above the nest and
can be heard begging for food when the adults return to the trees. The colony
is three miles straight line distance from the Tennessee border and ten miles
by the river. Jim advises this is the only colony he is aware of in the county.
