VA Birders,
Bill Cross, Pat Blyer, and I decided to risk the weather this morning and
we went birding at Long Branch Nature Area in Arlington. A Canada Warbler
near the parking lot at Long Branch was a harbinger of more good birds to
come. Bill spotted a male Golden-winged Warbler on the rocks across Long
Branch (stream) opposite the picnic shelter just before we reached the bridge
across Four Mile Run. It then flew into a small tree at the edge of the
stream, where we got more excellent looks at it, and then up into a tree near
the shelter and out of sight. Scarlet Tanagers and Swainson's Thrushes were
among our most common birds, with at least 8-10 of each species. We also had
a Solitary Sandpiper at the new ponds at "Sparrow Swamp."
Our total for the morning was 45-50 species (seen and heard).
