On the ANS field trip to Riverbend Park today, led by Dave Young, we found a
male COMMON GOLDENEYE on the Potomac River just offshore from Conn Island.
Other lingering ducks included a male BUFFLEHEAD and at least 7 RINGED-NECKED
DUCKS. While viewing the Goldeneye, two CASPIAN TERNS flew by. There were
also at least 10 WOOD DUCKS about. And with the rookery on Conn Island, GREAT
BLUE HERONS were continually flying over.
The field trip produced 60 species including several male BALTIMORE ORIOLES,
a pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS, and EASTERN KINGBIRDS
while we were assembled at the boat ramp. The group compiled a list of 7
warbler species, including close looks at a
PROTHONOTARY, 5 raptors species and 6 sparrow species, in addition to other
earlier migrants and the year round residents.
Back home, first of the year visitants in my yard this afternoon included a
WORM-EATING and a NASHVILLE WARBLER, and AMERICAN REDSTART--all in top
breeding plumage--the Nashville displaying its chestnut cap. Two male SCARLET
TANAGERS and a GRAY CATBIRD also came in to bathe.
