Va-Birders:
A group of 200+ Northern Gannets were swarming over the York River just
downstream of the Coleman Bridge this morning. They provided great close
looks resting on the water and diving after tasty unidentified morsels.
They were joined by a larger-than-usual congregation of D-C Cormorants,
Brown Pelicans, various gulls, and a number of Common Loons. Perhaps there
was an influx of prey fish into the lower river this morning.
Saw my first Red-Breasted Merganser and Laughing Gull at the Gloucester
Point Beach as well this morning. The Ospreys (3 pairs) here are busy
putting back together nests that were removed by Hurricane Isabel. A few
Red-Winged Blackbirds were in full "song." Large numbers of Ruddy Ducks and
Buffleheads still remain at various places on the river between Gloucester
Point and Cheatham Annex on the Colonial Parkway.
