Welcome to the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society.  This tape was made on Tuesday, March 1 at 4:45
pm.

Top birds this week are GYRFALCON in DE and NORTHERN SHRIKE* in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, NORTHERN FULMAR, raptors,
AMERICAN WOODCOCK, gulls, alcids, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER, WESTERN TANAGER, sparrows, SNOW BUNTING, PAINTED BUNTING,
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD.   

The last report of the GYRFALCON, first spotted last week, was
February 22 near the tower at Little Creek, flying north toward Port
Mahon. 

An adult NORTHERN SHRIKE has been frequenting Pickering Creek Audubon
Center, Talbot Co, MD with reports on February 26 and 27.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was located at the Worton Wastewater
Treatment Plant, Kent Co, MD on February 23.  The Greenland race
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, previously reported at the intersection
of Cods Road and Prime Hook Beach Road, Sussex Co, DE was relocated on
February 26.

EURASIAN WIGEONS continued to be reported during the week.  One
remains at the Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR with reports from
February 22 and 27.  A  EURASIAN WIGEON has been seen at the Great
Marsh Park in Cambridge, Dorchester Co, MD on February 22, 23, 26 and
27.  The EURASIAN WIGEON was still present at Eagles Landing Golf
Course south of Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD, on February 27.

Two KING EIDERS and 12 COMMON EIDERS were seen at the Ocean City Inlet
early on February 27.  An immature KING EIDER was found at the
Kiptopeke SP harbor on February 28.  COMMON EIDERS were noted from the
CBBT, Island 4, also on February 28.

Five HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen on the CBBT, Island 4 on February 27.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was spotted on a wire on New Hampshire Avenue near
Spencerville, Montgomery Co, MD on February 27.

On February 23, a PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in downtown Rockville,
Montgomery Co, in the vicinity of the Executive Office Building and
Monroe Park.  On the same day, a PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted perched
in a large snag along Rt. 298 south of Butlertown, Kent Co, MD.
Another PEREGRINE FALCON flew fairly low across Clarks Road, Caroline
Co, MD on February 25.

The peenting of AMERICAN WOODCOCK, another sure sign of impending
spring, has been heard throughout the region during the week.

An adult winter-plumaged BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen at Slaughter
Beach, Sussex Co, DE on February 26. Another BLACK-HEADED GULL was
found at Lynnhaven, VA late in the afternoon on February 28. A
juvenile GLAUCOUS GULL was noted at the Prince Georges Co. landfill on
February 27.  An ICELAND GULL was found close to the parking lot at
the Ocean City Inlet on February 27. 

Two pelagic trips went out on February 26 with spectacular results.
The trip from Virginia Beach, VA tallied NORTHERN FULMAR, ICELAND
GULL, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, DOVEKIE, RAZORBILL and ATLANTIC PUFFIN.
The trip from Lewes, DE tallied RED PHALAROPE, NORTHERN FULMAR,
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, DOVEKIE, COMMON MURRE and ATLANTIC PUFFIN in
DE and MD waters.

A lone DOVEKIE popped up in the Ocean City Inlet on February 22.

A SWAINSON'S THRUSH was seen on February 26 in the woods off the
boardwalk at Prime Hook NWR, Sussex Co, DE.

A cooperative ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was noted on Naylor's Beach Road
near Warsaw, VA on February 27.

A WESTERN TANAGER continues in Virginia Beach. The homeowner can be
contacted at VAGIRL@xxxxxxx.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW offered great views on Jones Creek Road near
Newland, Richmond Co, VA on February 27.

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was foraging in a corn field at the sod farms near
Remington, Fauquier Co, VA on February 25.

Two SNOW BUNTINGS were found in a large flock of HORNED LARKS near the
intersection of Rolling Bridge Road and Rt 304, Queen Anne's Co, MD on
February 25.

A male PAINTED BUNTING continues to visit a feeder, off and on, in the
Deep Creek area of Chesapeake, VA (south of Norfolk). The feeder, to
the left of the house, can be viewed from the driveway at 2813 Lambert
Trail, which is near the intersection of Rte 13 (S. Military Highway)
and Rte 17 (George Washington Highway). 

A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD appeared briefly at feeders in a yard in
Tunis Mills, Talbot Co, MD on February 25.

A single male BREWER'S BLACKBIRD was spotted Feb 22 in Frederick Co,
along Graceham Rd a short distance beyond the so-called Lapwing wet
spot.

Those of you lucky enough to host a winter hummingbird are asked to
contact hummingbird bander Mary Gustafson at live4birds@xxxxxxx. Mary
is working to document winter hummingbirds in the east.
