I went down to the P.W. county landfill this morning, my first trip of the
season. A short time sorting through the Laughing Gulls turned up an adult
Franklin's. There were maybe 3000 gulls there in total, of which 2/3 were
Laughing. Large gulls were not plentiful: there was only 1 Lesser Black-backed
(an adult) and around 20 Great Black-backed, and only around 150 or so Herring.
At around 9:30 AM all the gulls rose into the air. I thought it would be one
of the Bald Eagles but instead it was a first year Golden Eagle, which came in
very low and then slowly rose up on a thermal before heading south. It was
maybe no more than 100 feet above my head at first, giving crippling views.

If you go to the landfill please observe any directions they give you and be
on your best behavior since a number of landfills in the area are now closed to
birders, and we want this one to stay open.
