Subject: Horned Grebe, others BLue Ridge Center, Loudoun Co
It was a beautiful clear, though cold, morning for a bird walk at the Blue
Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship (BRCES) in northwestern Loudoun
County. Three of us walked the power cut, the woods to Gordon Pond, and
Arnold Rd.
The highlights of the walk was a single HORNED GREBE at Gordon Pond, I
believe the first for the Blue Ridge Center, a couple of HERMIT THRUSHES,
and a FOX SPARROW. A lot of woodpeckers (six species) were easily found as
they were very vocal and easily seen on the leafless trees.
While the trails are normally open to visitors from dawn to dusk at the
Blue Ridge Center, access is limited during hunting season due to
controlled hunts.
