I'll add to the chatter about accipiter meals this story of ours.
This Saturday we awoke more tired than usual thanks to someone's car
alarm that went off in the wee hours. We didn't need caffeine, though,
because when my husband opened the blinds in front of our sliding glass
doors at 9 am, we were jolted by the sight of a huge mass of feathers
and a half-eaten rock pigeon inches from the doors. I suspect that the
sharp-shinned hawk that has been cruising our West Alexandria
neighborhood had an early breakfast, as the pigeon's body was frozen
solid. The glass doors themselves bear ghostly images of several pigeons
and mourning doves, who apparently bumped into the glass in panic before
all but one of them escaped their attacker. One "doveprint" is rather
exquisitely detailed--I almost hate to clean it off.
