Yesterday (Saturday) at about 1400 (2pm), the male Eurasian Wigeon was seen
on the pond near Christopher Farms Drive in Virginia Beach. Some time was
spent trying to decide if any of the female wigeon nearby were also Eurasian
Wigeon, but none appeared to be. One female wigeon does like to stay near
the Eurasian Wigeon.
Then, at about 1600 (4pm), a Red-necked Grebe was seen well at Rudee Inlet
in Virginia Beach. It was diving within the mouth of the inlet. Also seen
at Rudee Inlet were 1 female Oldsquaw, some Red-breasted Mergansers, and
Red-throated Loons flying at the ocean horizon. One Red-throated Loon
appeared within the inlet and come very close. I am concerned about the
health of this bird because it had a lot of oil on its feathers, but it was
able to dive. I hope it will be able to take care of itself.
Yesterday, I did not know about the Clark's Grebe being seen. But, the
oceanfront at 85th Street (just south of the eastern gate to Fort Story) was
checked out yesterday. Some Red-throated Loons and Bonaparte's Gulls were
seen, but not the grebe.
