On Saturday, in addition to the waterfowl show at Burke Lake, Bart Hutchinson
and I spent a little while at Julie Metz in PW County. We enjoyed watching
thousands of gulls streaming overhead for the better part of an hour. Best
birds were the sparrows: seven species, including fox (6), tree (1), field
(3), swamp (2), song, white-throat, and junco. Also our first osprey of the
year (apparently not sufferent from deficiencies in its hydraulic system).
Leesylvania had small numbers of common and red-breasted mergs and
canvasbacks. Sunday morning, Philip Kline and I did a quick stop at Huntley
before joining Erika Wilson and co. at Dyke Marsh. Highlights included 2
snipe, a winter wren, and many pintails and green-winged teal (some of each
displaying). Also present were about 10 gadwall, 6 hooded mergs, 6 wood
duck, 1 coot. Finally, I completed my grebe trifecta with a pair of
pied-billeds out the window of the Torpedo Factory this evening.
