VA-Birders,
From about 3:30 to 5:30 PM this afternoon, I did a riverwatch off Dyke Marsh,
Fairfax Co hoping for storm-driven birds. Where nothing earth-shattering
showed, it is a rare event to get 5 species of terns at Dyke on the same day.
It was an amazing time, with the strong winds, stronger gusts, and plenty of
rain.
First tern seen was a Forster's, then another. Soon my first Least Tern
passed by, followed by a single Royal Tern that seemed confused, and flew back
and forth close to shore. Soon a few Caspians made a fly-by, and then the
highlight of the afternoon - a group of 5 Black Terns fighting the wind heading
upriver.
Species List below. The only thing not on the list is a group of about 45
peeps that flew upriver that were too far away to ID to species.
