Birders,
This afternoon, at Mason Neck State Park, Sonia Santa Anna and I saw 11 species
of ducks: at the Great Marsh, several hundred Black Ducks, a couple of
Green-winged Teal, and Mallards (and many distant ducks and 15 Tundra Swan on
the river); at Belmont Bay near the Visitor Center, a huge raft of Lesser
Scaup, many Ruddy, and Ring-necked Ducks, 5 Redheads, a couple dozen
Canvasbacks, a dozen Gadwall, several Buffleheads and Wigeon, and a Pied-billed
Grebe. As we arrived at the Visitor Center, a black curtain of 1000+ Common
Grackles was swooping around and filling the tops of trees and then swooping
around again making quite a racket...it was a bit like a scene from the
Hitchcock film, but wonderful!
