My daughter and I saw at least 14 Double-Crested Cormorants late this afternoon
at Lake Accotink Park. The birds were flying, swimming, drying their wings and
generally putting on a nice show.
Lake Accotink is in Springfield, VA (Fairfax County). In the Northern Virginia
ADC map book, the park is on map 22, with the main entrance at about 22-D-7.
Take #617/Backlick Road to the traffic light at Highland Street. Follow
Highland west to Accotink Road. There are signs for the park. The park road
itself is paved but long, winding and rough --especially the speed bumps.
There is a large parking lot below the dam. There are plenty of areas offering
good views of the lake after one walks up the hill from the parking lot.
Lake Accotink Park seems to be neglected by Fairfax County and by naturalists,
but there are many wonderful things to be seen there.
