The Clark's Grebe has returned for a fourth winter, seen this afternoon
(2:30-ish) by Tom Gwynn and Don Schwab from the beach overlook at First Landing
State Park in Virginia Beach. Traveling east on Shore Drive, turn LEFT into
the
camping area of the park, and drive to the far side of the parking lot, near
the orientation building. The overlook is reached by wooden boardwalk from
here. Tom and Don located a Pacific Loon yesterday from the Cherrystone-area
boat ramp, north of Cape Charles, but it has not been relocated today. There
are
huge numbers of loons, mostly Red-throated, present around the Bay mouth this
week; observers yesterday on the Cape Charles CBC noted some 7000+ flying
past Fisherman Island alone! The Chesapeake Bay CBC also had a record-high
count. Greater-than-normal numbers of Common Loons (for late December) have
also
been tallied in the Bay mouth and at Back Bay's outer beaches. On 29 December
at False Cape State Park, I noted a Western Grebe on the ocean about 3/4 mile
north of the road that comes from the comfort station out to the beach.
