VA Birders,
A male CERULEAN WARBLER was singing in my yard as I stepped outside this
morning, here in Buchanan County. The bird kept going from tree to tree, so
it took me a few minutes to finally get him with the glasses. I had only a
brief look before he took off for greener pastures.
The nesting male SCARLET TANAGER continues to sing near the yard each day,
and the YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS were seen carrying food into the hedges at the
edge of the backyard. The YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO continues to be heard, though
he doesn't show himself very often. The YELLOW WARBLERS are not as visible
as they were earlier. I think the female is busy incubating eggs in their
nest high in a maple tree in the backyard. Both pairs of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS
have had their young fledge, but they still come for the mealworms offered
each morning. The pair of GRAY CATBIRDS are nesting somewhere close by, and
they, along with the pair of BROWN THRASHERS, are now coming to get the
ripening cherries in the cherry tree, just outside the kitchen window.
Unfortunately the STARLINGS are coming in also. The RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS
clean out a peanut butter/suet tray in one day. They are carrying it to
their young in the top of a dead locust tree out in the field, and finally,
a pair of CAROLINA WRENS have 6 eggs in a natural gourd on the side of an
out building.
