Observations:
We finally had a taste today here on the Inner Piedmont of what the Blue
Ridge has been experiencing in recent days. The first small kettles were
noted at 10:15 and 10:30 EST, and the next hour was the heaviest, with
four nearly continuous streams over the ridge 11:45-12:00. The rest of
the afternoon was quieter, but punctuated with occasional pushes, with
some of the kettles over the ridge and others occasionally spotted off to
either the north or south. The last groups came through at 16:00 and
16:15, with the last bird noted at 17:05 as it set down for the night just
down ridge. Mark Johnson picked a good day to take some time off work and
come up, and spotted our first merlin of the season and one of the two
immature bald eagles, as well as some of the streams. Birds were of course
high and difficult to spot and the help was welcome. The following is an
hourly breakdown (EST) of the broadwings:
9:45 9
10:00 63
11:00 620
12:00 107
13:00 120
