Sorry for the late report but I just returned from a 5 day trip starting at
the CBBT and ending at Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware.
The highlight at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel continues to be the
thousands of Scoters in close to the islands. I estimated about 85% to be Surf
and
15% Black. I only observed 4 White-winged. Other ducks present were: a pair of
Harlequins, 3 Common Eider, 2 Long-tailed Ducks, 2 Redheads (males), Common
and Red-breasted Mergansers, and Lesser Scaup. There were also Brant, Great
Cormorants, a few Gannets, Purple Sandpiper, and of course, Ruddy Turnstones.
In the Cape Charles area, I located an Eurasian Collared Dove on Rte 600 near
the intersection with Rte 645 on March 3.
At Willis' Wharf, late afternoon on March 4, I found an estimated 150 Marbled
Godwits and 125 Willets. I assume they were staging for migration. There
were also Dunlin, Dowitchers and some peeps present.
Chincoteague NWR was somewhat of a letdown on March 5. I saw Horned Grebes
on Tom's Cove as well as a small flock of Snow Geese. (The following day in
Delaware, I observed three separate flocks of thousands of Snow Geese at
Broadkill Beach, Slaughter Beach, and the Ted Harvey preserve.)
The highlight at Ocean City Inlet, MD, were three lingering Razorbills on
March 5.
