The juvenile Brant was again in the company of Canada Geese,
scaups, and Ruddy Ducks this morning between 8:15 and 8:45
AM at Mason Neck State Park. The bird was 75-100 yards from
the shore, but easily seen from the boardwalk of the Bay
View trail.
It appeared that the bird was not totally comfortable with
the Canadas, since it kept just off the edge of a small
flock swimming in the bay. When the Canadas took flight, the
Brant was the last to fly, but then turned, dropped out of
the flock, and returned to join the scaup and ruddies.
I got four shots with my digital camera. The three taken
through my scope are grainy, but the best I could get at the
distance. They can be viewed at
