When I opened my window at 6 o'clock this morning I was very surprised to see a
male Blue Grosbeak sitting on the wooden fence just outside my room. They are
not a common sight here at 2,680 ft. elev. on the Blue Ridge.
The fields and woods today were alive with birdsong and so I decided to take as
full a census as possible of the birdlife here at the monastery. Covering most
of the 250 acres and walking down our mile of stream I was amazed at the number
of Hooded Warblers and Ovenbirds. I also finally saw the Scarlet Tanagers I
have been hearing for the last 4 days.
