Jen Folts and I headed out early this morning to Possum Pt and Cockpit Rds.
Lots of
good birds, I guess the best being WORM-EATING WARBLER, of which we had two.
Also at this location, we saw/heard, nesting OPSPREY, BALD EAGLE. YEL-
LOWLEGS (sp), RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD; RED, WHITE AND BLUE VIREOS,
PLUS YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, HOUSE WREN, BG GNATCATCHERS (plenty);
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS (numbers way down; the great push seems to be over);
WOOD THRUSH, THRASHER. Warblers were: NORTHERN PARULA, YELLOW-RUMPED,
YELLOW-THROATED, PINE, PALM, BLACK-AND-WHITE, WORM-EATING, OVENBIRD and COMMON
YELLOW-THROAT. Also seen were SCARLET TANAGERS.
We then set off for Leesylvania State Park and added several new species to
our
list, picking up KING RAIL at Julie Metz en passant (heard only). It was
here we
had our YELLOW WARBLER, also YELLOW-THROATED, YELLOW-RUMPED
and PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS, plus ORCHARD ORIOLE(2) and half-a-dozen ROYAL
TERNS (and FORSTERS). PURPLE MARTINS are back at their subdivision by the
visitors' center and we had a single CEDAR WAXWING.
Still having a bit of strength left we headed off for Monticello, otherwise
known as "the
swimming hole," in Alexandria, where it was pretty quiet but we did have
YELLOW-RUMPS,
BLUE-HEADED AND RED-EYED VIREOS AND WINTER WREN (a bird that has
escaped me thus far this year - hallelujah!)
