I returned to the private lake on Bells Lane in Augusta County this
afternoon. It appears the Eared Grebe left sometime last night; it was not
seen this morning or this evening.
However, a few new birds were present this evening -
SORA - single adult across lake from wood pile at end of barn. Observed
bathing along shore under overhang of branches. It walked back up the bank,
disappearing in underbrush.
AMERICAN COOT, a single bird at far back along shore next to cattails (dam
side)
Additional birds included:
PIED-BILL GREBE - only one tonight
RUDDY DUCK - 2 still present
WOOD DUCK - single drake
CHIMNEY SWIFT - impressive flock of approximately 100 swirling over lake,
dipping onto water's surface like swallows.
GREAT BLUE HERON - single adult sleeping at water's edge
BELTED KINGFISHER
