On Sept. 13, 10 die-hard birders showed up in the rain for the regular monthly
Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve bird walk. We split into two groups, one led by
Kurt Gaskill, one by me. Both leaders were assisted by a lot of very good
birders. Before and after the Banshee Reeks walks a few people visited the
Dulles Greenway Wetlands Mitigation Project (DGWMP) which is immed. to the
west of Banshee. A total of 58 species were observed at the Banshee Reeks
Nature Preserve (www.bansheereeks.org) and at the nearby Dulles Wetlands.
While the rain kept the totals down there were some int'g birds. They were:
Virginia Rail, Sora, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Bank Swallow, Cliff
Swallow and Marsh Wren at the DGWMP and a female/HY Rose-breasted Grosbeak at
Banshee. Also observed was 1 Red-headed Woodpeckers.
Also, Banshee Reeks is now open to the general public from 8 am to 4 pm on the
3rd weekend of every month (Sept. 20 and 21 this month).
