Hello all
This is a little odd in doing but I have been busy with work & other
commitments that I have not reported anything for a while . Lets see I will
start with when my wife ( Pat ) & I went to the Eastern Shore & Chincoteague on
the weekend of April 17th to the 19th . This was a very pleasant & relaxing
weekend where we chalked up a total of 125 species of birds . Below is the high
lights of this trip . Sorry for the lat postings.
Red - throated Loon
Common Loon
No. Gannet -- many seen from the CBBT
White Pelican -- 1 on the 19th seen in between Fisherman's Island & Island 4
Great Cormorant -- 1 Imm. on the 17th on Island 3
Snow Goose -- 1 on the 18th at Chincoteague's causeway
Harlequin Duck -- 4 on Island 4 on the 19th
all three species of Scoter's in small numbers off of Islands 3& 4 on the 17th
Merlin -- 1 on the 17th flying over the Police office on the Eastern Shore side
Laughing Gull -- by the hundreds
Gull -- billed Tern -- 1 on the 18th on the causeway at Chincoteague
Royal Tern -- 1 on the 18th at Saxis
Sedge Wren -- at Chincoteague on the 18th
Indigo Bunting -- at Chincoteague on the 18th
Well back to Augusta County & back to the grind of work . Here are some of the
high lights from our area in the Mountains & Valleys . I had the 22nd of April
off from work & here are the high lights from that day
Gadwall --- 6 on Bells Lane
Great Egret -- 2 in the flooded fields behind the Stuarts Draft Treatment Plant
& 2 at Smith's Pond in Swoope
On the 23rd of April my Nephew Daniel here a couple of Bobolink's at his house
in the Weyers Cave area of Augusta County. This turns out to be a new early
date for us .
On the 25th of April at Smith's Pond Pat & I had a good number of shore birds .
Lesser Yellowlegs -- 3
Solitary Sandpiper -- 2
Spotted -- 9
Least -- 1
On the 26th at the Boy Scout Camp we had 2 Osprey & at Smith's two pair of
Canada Geese with young . One group had 2 young that were about a week & a half
old & the other had 3 about 3 days old .
Today May 1st we went out to the Augusta Wetlands where we had about 30
Yellow-- rumped Warblers , a couple of Blue - headed Vireo's , Great -- crested
Flycatcher & a couple of Indigo Bunting's . After leaving the Wetlands we
headed up towards the Augusta Correctional Center to Rt 862 that takes you
across the mountain ( North Mountain ) from the Craigsville area to the
Middlebrook area . Boy did we hit the jack pot . Below is a list of what we saw
& hear .
Barred Owl -- on the hunt ( possibly looking for food to feed young )

Louisiana Waterthrush -- 1
Kentucky Warbler -- 2
Scarlet Tanager -- 5
Rose -- breasted Grosbeak -- 3
Indigo Bunting -- 6
Bobolink -- 2 on Rt 252 near the Town of Middlebrook
Quillen's
D C Cormorant -- 1
Greater Yellowlegs -- 1
Not a bad day of birding in Augusta County May 1st. And a big sorry for the
late posts in April . Happy Birding to all .
