Yesterday, Sunday the 21st, I conducted a casual breeding bird survey here on
the Abbey lands, and found most of what I consider typical for our nesting
species. The Ovenbirds seem to have been quite successful this year, as the
woods were chock full of them wherever I stepped. On Saturday our pair of
Canada Geese, which had hatched 6 goslings about a week ago, marched their
brood off into the woods, and I haven't seen them since. It seemed at the time
a rather unprudent thing to do, but they didn't ask me.
Also on Saturday, in the late afternoon, I heard a faint call of the
Screech-Owl, and followed the sound down towards the river, where I startled
two owls, one reddish-brown and the other gray. They flushed from a mountain
laurel tangle, and the brown one flew right at me, then landed on a branch 5
feet above my head, clacking its bill loudly and and twitching its tail. Then
both owls flew off, in opposite directions, and I didn't see them again.
