Hi Larry
It was nice to see you and your group At Craney Yesterday, I picked up two
birds for my year list American Avocets
and Wilson's Phalaropes.
When I was at Hog Island on Wednesday 8/20 the White Pelican was nor visible
from the observation platform. The Field was not posted and I had to walk out
in the field to see him. He took flight while we were viewing the upland
sandpipers from the main rd. When he landing again he was visible from main rd
and had only moved about 10 Ft.
Unless they did some serious tree trimming when they posted the field the bird
will be hard to spot from observation platform.
I was successful a few years back in getting some trees cut so you could see
from the observation platform.
The contact I had is no longer the head Ranger. Tony has taken a job with
security at S.N. power plant
If any body is there and sees a ranger it never hurts to ask. you no what they
say about the squeaky wheel .
I didn't see one when I was there on Wed.
After this week you will have hunting going on and a vehicle security checks,
if it is like it was last year?
I doubt the Pelican will hang around after the shooting starts.

Subject: [va-bird] Avocets, Phalaropes, Stilts, Pelicans - Highlights from
Craney and Hog islands
Date: Saturday - August 23, 2003
Locations: Craney Island (Portsmouth) -- Hog Island ( Surry County)
Hi all....
Several groups of birders shared sightings at Craney Island yesterday.
Highlights included: 21+ American Avocets, Black-necked Stilt, (2)
Wilson's Phalaropes, (1) Red-necked Phalarope, nice assortment of peeps,
plovers, terns, etc.
Hog Island: The American White Pelican and at least (2) Upland
Sandpipers are still present. Both species were observed from the
observation platform on the left side of the road. Look back across the
road in the fields for the Uplands... and past the fields to the long
pond for the pelican. Unfortunately, the refuge has now posted "do not
enter" signs to keep everyone off of the dirt cross roads and out of the
fields. So, you now have to stay on the main road and use the platform to
scan for the birds. (Reminder: vehicle security checks are required to
enter the refuge.)
Good birding to all,
Larry
