I wasn't going to post this but was inspired to do so by the postings of Robin
and Edna. I live in a garden apt. complex in south Arlington. Last winter I
was astonished to see from my living room window a very large raptor bouncing
on something. It would lift up about a foot and bounce repeatedly. By the
time I got my bincoulars, it was gone. What I remember is that the bird was
large (well over a foot tall) and had a lot of slate-grey coloring. Later in
the day I saw the remains of what could only have been a pigeon not too far
from where I had seen the action. One full wing remained with lots of feathers
nearby.
Yesterday, on my way to the laundry room, I saw what looked like the same sort
of remains. Except that closer inspection revealed not one speck of anything
else but feathers in that circle. A lot of feathers.
Is there any other raptor besides a Peregrine Falcon that can take out a
pigeon?
There is a rather tall AT&T building across Walter Reed Drive from my apt.
complex where lots of pigeons hang out. I've been thinking maybe I should
start scanning that building for a Peregrine, but then it wouldn't make sense
for all of those pigeons to be hanging out there if a Peregrine had found a
home there too. Or would it?? If anyone has any insight on this, I would love
to hear your views.
