VA Birders,
Bill Cross, Pat Blyer, Betty Kilgore, and I went to Fort Smith Park,
Arlington Co., this morning to see if any more migrants had arrived. We were
not disappointed. As I got out of my car, I saw a Scarlet Tanager sitting in
the top of a Sycamore tree in back of the parking lot. Other highlights
included 3 Orchard Orioles, a Yellow Warbler, a pair of Eastern Bluebirds, 3
Savannah Sparrows, a Blue Grosbeak, and 3 Eastern Kingbirds. The 3 Orchard
Orioles (first-year male and females) flew into a tree at the edge of the
parking lot. The Yellow Warbler came and bathed in our new Bird Stream with
2 male Am. Goldfinches. A Yellow-rumped Warbler and a Brown Thrasher also
came and bathed there. Then Bill spotted a female Eastern Bluebird, which
came down to the water too. Soon after it left the water, I spotted the male
bluebird sitting on top of one of our bluebird boxes. (I was glad I had
checked the box yesterday and cleaned out the beginning of a wasp nest.)
Bill also spotted the Blue Grosbeak, a beautiful adult male, which was
sitting in the straw back behind the parking lot. While we were watching it,
we counted 3 Savannah Sparrows along the edge of the path. Finally, when we
were making our list in the gazebo, because it had started to rain, 3 Eastern
Kingbirds flew in and landed in a Black Walnut tree.
We counted over 40 species in all at Fort Smith Park today.
