VA Birders,
Yesterday morning (Wednesday, April 9), I had to take my husband to
National Airport in Arlington for an early flight, and I did some birding at
Gravelly Point and Roaches Run, also in Arlington Co., after dropping him
off. Since it was raining, I did most of my birding from the car. At
Gravelly Point, it was fairly slow at first, but then I saw 2 Caspian Terns.
Then a Bonaparte's Gull flew in and disappeared behind the airport fence. I
soon realized a flock of gulls were on the pavement behind the fence, but in
the rain I could not tell for sure what they were. However, when they all
finally flew up, I counted at least 15 Bonaparte's gulls in the group! I
also had 3 swallows fly by me which I am virtually certain were Tree
Swallows. A little later, when I went over to Roaches Run, I found at least
1 Red-necked Grebe was still there, and I had 3 Barn Swallows flying over the
water in the big pond.
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
