I birded Craney Island this afternoon for about an hour. Pretty much every
shorebird seen was at the west side of the south impoundment. Very few peep
were about and the ones present were too far to ID. Most of the shorebirds
were Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, but there were a good number of Pectoral
Sandpipers (>20) compared to what I have seen at Craney. There were
dolphins off the west side of Craney. They were very active -- one jumped
out of the water several times. The tern flock is still present, as well as
the nice assortment of ducks in the south impoundment. Two Common
Nighthawks and a Red-tailed Hawk were also seen at Craney, but the two
species were not seen at the same time. The mosquitos were worst than a
week ago. Forgetting to wear a long-sleeved shirt added to my problem, but
I managed to keep most of the mosquitos away.
I was planning on visiting Craney tomorrow, but right now I probably won't
get back to Craney until next week. I seem to have accidently erased an
e-mail from another birder who wished to join me -- I think her name was
Renee. I can be terrible with names, so I apologize. I just wanted to let
her know that I probably won't be visiting Craney until next Monday or
later.
The shorebirds species seen are as follows:
Killdeer
Semipalmated Plover
American Avocet (24, at the west side of the south impoundment)
Willet
Sanderling
Red Knot (4, southwest corner of the south impoundment)
Dunlin (1, southwest corner of the south impoundment)
Greater Yellowlegs
Lesser Yellowlegs
Stilt Sandpiper (3, southwest corner of the south impoundment)
Pectoral Sandpiper
Black Tern (1, flying over the west side of the south impoundment)
Elisa Enders
Portsmouth, VA
