VA Birders,
Four warbler species were among the 29 that showed up in my yard this
morning.
The highlight of the day was a handsome male Blackburnian Warbler that fed
among the branches of the walnut tree in the backyard. Shortly after a
bright male Hooded Warbler landed on the power line before dropping into the
apple tree to hunt for insects.
Within minutes a pair of Northern Parulas was feeding in the top of a White
Pine. Just under them in the same tree a Yellow-throated Warbler made its
way along a branch. Not long after a second Yellow-throated made an
appearance. A third Northern Parula showed up later in a tree near the
backyard pond.
All of the feeding came to a standstill when a small Sharp-shinned came
zipping through to pause for a moment in the top branches of the White Pine.
After catching sight of me it was soon gone and feeding resumed.
A Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, a family of Towhees, a family of Cardinals and a
couple of Red-eyed Vireos were calling as they hunted for food at different
points around the yard.
In the afternoon following a rainstorm two Wild Turkeys made their way
across the yard, probably on their way to the neighbor's field where
grasshoppers can be had.
