:laughes: I see someone was taking lessons from me. _____ From: usseagle-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:usseagle-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Roman Sent: Tuesday, August 16, 2005 2:10 PM To: usseagle@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: <USS Eagle> "Vanik" ON Lieutenant Haas walked over to Lt. Vanik as the try-outs for the Beater positions commenced. "Mr. Vanik," Haas started out. "May I see you for a moment?" "'Mister?'" asked Vanik. then in a joking tone, commented, "This sounds serious, Sir." Vaniks emphasis on calling Rommie "sir" was not lost on Haas. He and Vanik had gone through the academy together and had been assigned to the Eagle together. Haas had caught the attention of the captain sooner than Vanik had and therefore had climbed the command ladder a bit quicker than Vanik. Vanik, a self-assured, handsome man who stood about four inches taller than Haas, followed him over to a secluded section of the stadium. He was not certain what the ship's acting XO had to say to him. Maybe he was going to give his suport for Vanik's appointment to the chasers out of earshot of the other contestants. Haas turned to Vanik and indicated him to sit on the bench as he remained standing. Vanik complied. "I-I wanted to speak to you about the way you treated M-Matthews," Haas started. "I felt i-it was un-officer-like conduct." If looks could indeed kil, Haas would be lying on the Quidditch pitch, totally lifeless. Vanik shot him a "you have got to be kidding me" look. "Are we letting the XO's position go to our head, Rommie? You're not serious, right? I was only ribbing Matthews. He knows that." Rommie let Vanik's potentially insubordinate comment slide by. He did, however fix his eyes directly on Vanik's. "What you said to a-and about Matthews was out of line. Matthews may not have s-said so to you, but I could see how you comments affected him. You're a good player, Vanik. A natural at most th-things you do. B-but your attitude towards others is what's keeping you on the third shift." "There is nothing the matter with my attitude," Vanik complained. He wanted to add that he wasn't the kiss-up type that Rommie was and that's why he wasn't the ship's second officer, but decided against it. "Is it my fault people don't know how to take constructive criticsm?" "Th-there was nothing constructive in your comments," Rommie said flatly. "Just be w-warned, Lieutenant, that if your a-attitude does't change, it will have a d-detrimental effect on any promotions i-in the future." "You would prevent me from being promoted?" Vanik said coming to his feet. "It's not my decision," Haas said, keeping his temper down. "But recommendations f-from myself or Commander Marqusa go a long way w-witht he captain." "Man. You really have let this position go to your head," Vanik said vehemently. "I thought you were my pal." "B-beng your pal has nothing to do with the w-way you treat other people, Vanik," Rommie shot back at him. "And if y-you feel I am letting my job g-go to my head, feel freee to take it up with Commander Marqusa or..." "Oh yeah," snorted Vanik. "Like your girlfriend would side against you." "OR..." continued Rommie, again trying to ignore Vanik's comment. "Take it up with the captain. And if you feel Commodore Fyrstk wouldn't look at your complaint in all fairness than I s-suggest you p-put in for a transfer." "M-maybe I'll do just that," Vanik said angrily. Again Rommie was not going to be baited by his mock-stuter. "Are we finished...SIR?" "For now, Lieutenant," said Rommie. This talk did not go half as good as he had hoped, but when Vanik had never really like Rommie getting promotions over him, and not being afraid to show it, Rommie wasn't surprised. "And, Vanik..... I'm sorry." "Sorry?" Vanik asked. He was wondering if Rommie would apologise for this whole confrontation. "Sorry that you j-just don't get it," Haas told him. "Dismissed." OFF Lt.
