 Captain's Log
Stardate: 64643.66 (8/23/87 @ 2230)
Captain Gwenivere Marqusa recording

This is the first official log for the USS Persephone, a Hades class ship.
This class of ship is brand new class based off the Sovereign class, only
smaller. With the threat from the Firegon, the USS Persephone's schedule for
service was moved up. While I understand the need, it is a little bit
disconcerting considering the history while in testing phase. Prototype NX
60606 was destroyed because of a failure in the shielding, allowing for an
asteroid to strike one of the Nacelles which caused a warp core implosion. All
hands were lost. I have been assured that the issue has been fixed. It just
leaves me to wonder what else might have been over looked.
I can't help but compare the Persephone to the Eagle. The Hades class
ship is smaller in crew, with around 100 vs 150 for the Intrepid class. We
don't have as many auxiliary crafts, only 2 shuttle crafts. The ships are
roughly the same size, both having 15 decks and similar lengths. The Eagle was
more of a long range science vessel, where as the Persephone is a destroyer.
That's obvious when one compares the tactical systems. I definitely would
have loved to have them on the Eagle when I was tac officer. 20 type XIII
phaser arrays. The Eagle only had 15, and were not as advanced. When I get
some time, I'm going to want to play with it. The Persephone has more then
twice as many torpedo tubes. The defensive systems are better too, with auto
modulated 6-axis shield grid versus bi-directional shielding that I personally
had to modulate if needed. Now I'm not all into the auto modulation, I'm not
sure I trust it to modulate right. So, it's good that the auto modulation can
be manually modulated as well. It's nice that you don't HAVE to modulate it
though, if you're busy with other things. The ship also has ablative armor,
just like the Eagle. I'm sure if anyone listens to this, it's obvious that I
have a tactical background, but I can't help but compare the stuff I'm most
familiar with.
As to be expected, the engines are better then the Eagle's. Both ships
have sub mode and state of the art slip stream technology. Which means, we can
get to the battle faster, when needed, even long distance. The weird thing (at
least weird to me) is that the Persephone has 3 warp nacelles. I'm sure that
it's currently the only class with 3. This means that the Persephone is faster
then the Eagle was. Cruising speed is that of warp 8, compared to warp 6 for
the Eagle. We are also able to maintain max speed of 9.99 for up to 72 hours.
The Eagle could only maintain max speed for 12 hours, and only a speed of 9.975.
I'm sure that the type of missions the Persephone will be sent on will be
very different from that of the Eagle. I am eager to see where this ship is
headed. The first mission is definitely setting the tone. The Firegon have
decided to expand their activities into our space. That's something we can not
tolerate. If we let them have a little room now, they are going to want a
little room later and then a little more.
As for the mission, the Persephone is as ready as she'll ever be.
Commander Soren has informed me that all of the tactical systems are working.
Lt. Banning said that science was ready, but I think I heard a hint of
disappointment in his voice. Another difference with the Eagle, is that the
Persephone's science capabilities are not as good. Although, they aren't bad.
Cmdr Lost has informed me he's happy with helm control, after taking the
Persephone out for a quick run. Lt Wren told me that she has gotten reports
from Engineering and Medical stating that they are ready.
I have only met with Lt Ashton and Doctor Talor for a few minutes after
the meeting with senior staff. Both appear very competent. I have yet to see
the Vulcan's bedside manner, but, his file has nothing but complimentary
statements. I have also asked him to look into getting a copy of Dr. Ian
Resork's EMH program. Just in case. I have a feeling that the Persephone is
going to need it. And the Chief Engineer apparently helped design the Hades,
so he should know the system well. In fact, from the few minutes that I got to
talk to him he reminds me of Commander Bass, a former Chief Engineer on the
Eagle. We should have interesting times.
I have informed Pasteur Station that we are ready.
