These instuctions are apparently out of date, or incomplete. I followed the
example for Fairy Max, one of the chess engines that is installed with
winboard, but it did not work. I would launch winboard, and get the startup
dialog, and select crafty from the menu, and then nothing. I would look at
the task manager, and it would show winboard running, but the JAWS
application list window does not show it at all. So it was a zombie
process, which still responded to Alt-F4, and terminated properly. There
was never a display of the chess board up on the screen.
After tinkering around a bit, I found the solution; perhaps correcting a
mistake I made in setting up craftey in the first p-place.
I downloaded crafty, its books, and the documentation fileswhich did not
follow the names in the web page you provided. I put all these files in
C:\winboard\crafty and renamed crafty-20.14.exe to crafty.exe. I
probably did not need to do this, but it eliminated what to do with the
special characters in the .ini file. I looked over the source code for
scrafty, and to run it with winboard you must pass a command line parameter
winboard to the executable. I tried the following line in the .ini file.
crafty winboard /fd=c:\winboard\crafty
I still got a zombie process. So winboard must not be using the /fd
parameter to locate the executable. So I explicitly typed the name of the
executable in the following:
c:\winboard\crafty\crafty winboard /fd=c\winboard\crafty
It is important to place the executable name in quotes unlike sthe other
examples in the .ini file. This is the only way to pass crafty the command
line parameter winboard after the executable name.
And Winboard launched successfully, and crafty kibbitzd me, so I was
actually playing crafty. Now I need to research these books files, and how
to get them loaded properly. I did learn that crafty uses a crafty.rc file,
rather than a crafty.ini filea throwback to its unix origins I guess.
Golem, sadly, will not execute at allnot even from the command line.
Perhaps it is not compatible with multi-processors and 64-bit memory, or
perhaps is not compatible with the version of windows I am running. I did
fine another program of similar palty strength called tamerlane, so I will
give that a try.
Amy hints on how to get crafty to use its books?

Patrick,
You need to add the path to crafty into a configuration file in winboard,
the process is explained here:

Also, You might want to turn off the screen echo in your JAWS WinBoard
configuration file in order to shut up the clock.

Hello Patrick,
I got WinBoard to work perfectly. I used this 3 step process.
1. Activate this program (WinBoard Startup Dialog).
2. Press down arrow until (Play against a chess engine or match two engines)
then press the tab key.
A few other choices exist.
Just view or edit game files
Use an Internet Chess Server
3. Press down arrow to pick this chess engine in the list (fruit_21
/fd="Fruit" -fUCI) then press the enter key.

I did find a list of chess engines, and downloaded one, and all I got was a

Thanks

Well, if you are trying to play against the computer, my suggestions are:
1. Shredder for i Phone lets you select the playing strength of the
engines and play against it. You can tweak the configurations to configure
2. For windows, you can use winboard and set it up with several chess

3. Lechess, the website, is also somewhat accessible.

All,
A lot of traffic on this list and the sister-ones.
Can I suggest that folk write to individuals instead of the lists with
or whatever you are using, save the book/cbv file into a PGN file, which is
Lucas, save the CBV into a different format. In your chess-base or Fritz
word-process it.
So, save it in a PGN format, as that is easy and allows you to
it in a Word-Processing method and edit/format at will. Learn how theThen, open up the PGN file in WordPad or Notepad, and you can go through
reading these books, reading such things, is a useful, but not the absolute
Can I stress though, as I have done many a time on this list, that
in a productive, or, effective manner.
I gain the impression that your focus, objective approach is not centred

I am a computer science graduate and still getting problems....
jokes aside, I tried openning the encoded cbv file by hand to see
if the format was parseable somehow, but it is not the case. Cbv
turns out to be a closed format of the chessbase program, so it is
not possible to write a script apparently to convert it.
Anyway, thanks for the comments, I will keep trying different
produced in the chessbase format.

One can also try and tweek the chessbase reader settings to make

often located in a folder called html or pocket fritz. It is
regretable that you need to be a Computer Science graduate to
attempt to read chessbase files if you are visually impaired.

Reading about the sicilian dragon on the Internet, I came

I don't have chessbase yet, and I am not planning to buy it very

So, was wondering what program you use to read cbv, and if it is
