This morning, to my surprise, a GREEN HERON was calling loudly just to the
north of us from the neighbor's property. The bird then continued calling
as it apparently flew east. I never did see it. This is a new species for
our property/area (I record whatever I detect from our place, and note if
it is somewhere other than our property). This was not on my list of likely
new birds for our place, but I suppose it could have been, just because of
the neighbor's small pond to the north. Anyway, that was a fun surprise.
This morning at UCC I did not find any gnatcatchers. However, Liz had
asked me to keep an eye out for BALD EAGLES, and I DID see two of them: an
adult chasing an immature downriver. I watched them come up from the river
on the E side of UCC, then the adult chased and harassed the immature bird
(I think 3rd yr as it had the "osprey" face) down river at least to I-5
where I lost them. I interpreted this behavior as an adult chasing an
intruder out of its territory. There are plenty of large trees just east of
UCC that could house a Bald Eagle nest. Notes and photos here:
